Using an IP Instead of a Domain

Date Posted: August 2025

Some websites are launched using just an IP address, like http://123.45.67.89, instead of a proper domain name like example.com. This might seem faster or easier at first, especially for testing or temporary projects, and Fynd can index some sites by IP. But using only an IP comes with real problems.

Most importantly, if your IP changes in the future, or if you move your site to a domain name, search engines like Fynd will treat it as a brand-new website. Everything we’ve indexed under the old IP is lost, and your search presence starts from zero again.

There are other drawbacks too. You can’t get a valid SSL certificate for an IP, so browsers will show security warnings. Visitors won’t trust or remember a number like they do a name. Also, some services, like CDNs, won’t work without a domain.

Fynd supports IP-based sites, but domains are better for anything long-term. They make your site easier to find, safer to browse, and far more stable in the long run.
